Non-Profit Web Design: Scaling Impact for MAS Sussex
A vital community pillar with an invisible digital presence. We overhauled the MAS brand identity and web architecture to better serve a diverse, growing population.

MAS New Identity
- Initial Status: LOW_ACCESSIBILITY
- Turnaround: 4 Weeks
The Project Briefing
The Multicultural Association of Sussex (MAS) serves as the primary gateway for newcomers in the Sussex region, yet their digital presence was acting as a barrier rather than a bridge. With a website that was difficult to navigate on mobile and lacked clear pathways to essential services, MAS was struggling to connect with the very people who needed them most.
The brand was stuck in a legacy aesthetic—clinical and difficult to navigate. Their digital footprint wasn't just old; it was failing WCAG accessibility standards, effectively silencing their message for users with diverse technological and linguistic backgrounds.
This project was not a simple reskin. It was a digital infrastructure overhaul designed to democratize access to community resources in Sussex.
Accessibility & Engagement Audit
Before designing, we audited the existing platform. The site was structurally preventing newcomers from finding critical survival resources.
- ERR_01 // UX_FRICTION
Information Silos
Vital resources (housing, jobs, language classes) were buried 4-5 clicks deep. Users were abandoning the site before finding the help they needed.
- ERR_02 // ACCESSIBILITY
WCAG Non-Compliance
Poor color contrast and lack of screen-reader optimization made the site unusable for a significant portion of the community.
- ERR_03 // MOBILE_FAIL
Responsive Failure
Over 75% of newcomers access MAS resources via mobile devices. The existing desktop-first build was completely broken on smaller screens.
The Inclusion Framework
Enter Design prioritized speed and simplicity. We built a system that works as well in a low-bandwidth airport terminal as it does in a modern home office.
Audit Your OrganizationUniversal Design Architecture
We flattened the MAS site hierarchy. Critical services are now 'one-click' away from the homepage, utilizing a global navigation system designed for intuitive exploration.
Multilingual Optimization
We built a custom content structure that supports high-quality, human-translated content for the region's top spoken languages, ensuring MAS speaks to everyone.
Lightweight Performance
By stripping away bloated plugins, we reduced page load times by 70%. This ensures access for users on limited data plans or older mobile hardware.
The Community Transformation
We transitioned MAS Sussex from an invisible resource to a community beacon. The new platform isn't just a website; it's a tool for social integration that speaks to the dignity and diversity of the Sussex community.
Legacy Environment
- [!] Cluttered navigation with confusing jargon.
- [!] Static desktop layout that broke on mobile devices.
- [!] Muted colors that failed accessibility standards.
Modern Infrastructure
- [✓] Vibrant, inclusive palette with high-contrast readability.
- [✓] Mobile-first, lightning-fast, and multi-language ready.
- [✓] Clear pathways for Newcomers, Donors, and Volunteers.
Human-Centric Branding & Performant Design
We rebuilt the MAS brand to be warm, professional, and undeniably welcoming.
Psychology of Color
We moved MAS to a palette of 'Vibrant Earth Tones.' These colors are cross-culturally associated with growth and community warmth, while maintaining strict AAA accessibility contrast ratios.
The 'Pathways' Logo
We designed a symbol that represents multiple paths converging into a single community.
The Icon:
An interlocking geometric shape that symbolizes unity and support within Sussex.
Universal Legibility:
The mark was tested for clarity at 16px—ensuring it remains recognizable even on low-resolution devices.
Community Engine
We replaced a complex CMS with a custom-engineered performance engine.
Resource Directory:
A searchable, filterable database of Sussex community partners and services.
Event Integration:
A streamlined calendar that allows users to register for language classes and workshops in under 30 seconds.
Engagement Readout
Post-launch, MAS Sussex saw a dramatic shift in how the community interacted with their digital hub. Accessibility is no longer a goal—it's the standard.
- Mobile resource discovery increased by 90%.
- Volunteer applications rose by 40%.
- Multi-language page views grew exponentially.
Resource Engagement
Design for the most vulnerable user, and you end up creating a better experience for everyone. Inclusivity is the ultimate UX strategy for MAS.
